Winter Driving: Slipperiness and Snow

Keep your distance and adjust your speed

The braking distance on a slippery road surface can be up to ten times as long. Halve your speed and double the distance to the vehicle in front. Accelerate gently (possibly in second gear) to prevent slipping.

Braking on snow or ice

Modern cars have ABS (Anti-lock Braking System). If you have to brake hard, depress the brake and the clutch hard at the same time. The brake pedal will then vibrate, this is normal! Do not release the brake, but steer around the obstacle.

Scraping windows is mandatory

You can get a hefty fine if your view is obstructed by snow or ice on your windows. Ensure that your windshield, side windows, and exterior mirrors are completely ice-free before you drive off. Also clear the snow from your roof to prevent it from sliding onto your windshield while braking.
