Merging and Exiting: The Safest Method

Build up speed

The purpose of the acceleration lane is to build up speed. Accelerate smoothly so that your speed is roughly equal to the traffic in the right lane. Only merge at least halfway to three-quarters of the lane, not right at the beginning.

Finding space

Look in your mirrors while you are building up speed. You only indicate when you have found the gap and are about to merge. Drivers on the highway are not obliged to make room, but you are not allowed to hinder them either.

Exiting

When exiting, maintain your speed on the highway. Only when you have passed the block marking and are actually driving on the deceleration lane, do you start braking. Otherwise, you unnecessarily hinder through traffic on the highway.
