The Difference Between a Motorway and an Expressway

Motorway / Freeway (130 km/h max)

You recognize the motorway by the blue rectangular sign with a white highway. Important: agricultural vehicles and microcars are not allowed here. Basically, you are only allowed to drive here with a vehicle that can and may drive at least 60 km/h. Characteristic: separated carriageways with guardrails.

Expressway (100 km/h max)

You recognize the expressway by the blue square sign with a white car. A standard maximum speed of 100 km/h applies here. Your vehicle must be able and allowed to drive at least 50 km/h. Expressways often have intersections, traffic lights, or roundabouts, something you do not encounter on the motorway.

Speeds and trailers

On both the expressway and the motorway, a maximum speed of 90 km/h applies for cars with a trailer (where the combination is lighter than 3500kg).
