The Use of Lights: Dipped Beam, High Beam, Fog Light

Dipped beam and Daytime running lights

Dipped beam is your standard lighting at night and in tunnels. Daytime running lights often turn on automatically during the day, but beware: your taillights usually do not turn on with this! Therefore, always turn on your dipped headlights manually in rain or in a tunnel.

High beam

You may only use high beam at night if there is no oncoming traffic and you are not driving right behind someone. As soon as you see lights from others, you must immediately switch back to dipped beam to prevent dazzling.

Fog light

You may turn on front fog lights if visibility is seriously impaired by fog, snowfall, or rain. You may really only use the rear fog light if visibility is less than 50 meters due to fog or snowfall (never in the rain!).
