The Bicycle Path Sign: Rules and Exceptions

Mandatory bicycle path (Blue round sign)

The round blue sign with a white bicycle indicates a mandatory bicycle path. Cyclists and light mopeds must use this path. Sometimes it also applies to mopeds, provided there is a moped symbol with it.

Optional bicycle path (Rectangular sign)

The rectangular blue sign with the word 'fietspad' (bicycle path) indicates an optional bicycle path. Light mopeds with a combustion engine are *not* allowed to ride here. Only cyclists and electric light mopeds may use it, but it is not mandatory.

Onto the roadway

If there is no mandatory bicycle path (and you are not allowed to use the optional path or there isn't one), then as a light moped or moped rider you must ride on the roadway. This is common inside built-up areas.
