Aquaplaning: Prevention and Action

What is aquaplaning?

Aquaplaning occurs when a thin layer of water gets between your tires and the asphalt. Your tires lose their grip, causing your car to slide (surf) over the water, so to speak. You then no longer have control over the steering or the brakes.

How do you prevent it?

Ensure sufficient tread depth on your tires (minimum 1.6 mm legally, but preferably more). Always reduce your speed in heavy rain and do not drive in the rutting (the tracks where water often remains) of the road surface.

What should you do if it happens?

Stay calm! Slowly release your accelerator, depress the clutch and keep the steering wheel straight. Do **not** brake hard or suddenly pull the steering wheel. As soon as the speed drops, the tires will naturally regain grip on the road.
